I had the pleasure of eating at the Terrapin Grille Fallsview Restaurant located in the Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa yesterday. I was invited by Chef Ron Kneabone to taste the new Fall inspired menu.
When I walked into the Terrapin around noon I immediately felt relaxed. The floor to ceiling windows let in the perfect amount of sunlight. During the summer/early fall months the view of the falls is partially blocked by some trees, despite that I was able to catch a glimpse and it was spectacular! The tables were set with white linens. The décor is a bit outdated but the window seat held my attention more than the décor.
First up, the Appetizer: Atlantic Salmon on a Peaches and Cream Corn Blinis with Virgil Pear Cream
The appetizer came out looking like a piece of art. All of the ingredients were perfectly arranged on a modern square plate. I felt like I didn’t want to ruin the display but then realized I’d be crazy because it looked so yummy! I took my first bite (piece of the blinis, salmon and pear cream) and my mouth was in heaven. The combination of the ingredients was absolutely delightful. The Salmon was served fresh, the blinis were warm and the pear puree was the prefect temperature to compliment the other ingredients. All were locally grown except the salmon.
Next came the main dish: Charbroiled Veal Tenderloin Medallions on Roasted Butternut Squash, Grilled Asparagus and Oyster Mushroom Jus topped with Sweet Potato Chips.
I am not a big veal fan but I have to say the meat was charbroiled to perfection. Again the combination of the fresh locally grown asparagus (tasty and cooked to textbook perfection), the perfectly seasoned roasted butternut squash with a hint of cinnamon topped with the flavourful oyster mushroom jus was absolutely delectable! The combination of the ingredients again were spot on. The sweet potato chips were just an added bonus. I think the Chef is on to something here! I would rather have a bowl of sweet potato chips than greasy artery clogging potato chips any day!
Dessert: Pumpkin Pie Crème Brulee
I love crème brulee and I also love pumpkin pie so when I read the dessert on the menu I was really excited. The presentation was season appropriate. The dessert was made to look like a piece of pumpkin pie. The graham cracker and homemade whipped cream that topped the dessert were a very creative touch. Made me rethink my Thanksgiving dinner dessert ideas! I took my first bite and was hooked. Crème brulee can be a little sweet at times but the pumpkin in the custard evened out the sweetness and made my taste buds dance! Extremely scrumptious! The portion of the dessert allows you to share however the shear deliciousness of the dessert will make you want it all to yourself. I was extremely full from the appetizer and main course but I finished the whole brulee! I couldn’t leave a drop behind just too tasty!!
Two thumbs up to the new Falls Inspired menu! Chef Ron Kneabone never disappoints! I forgot to mention that each menu item is carefully paired with a local wine. I unfortunately was not able to taste the wines – can’t drink and work :). I will be going back and bringing my friends just to try each of the wine pairings which I am sure were carefully hand picked to compliment every menu item!
Whether you are a guest of the hotel, visiting Niagara Falls or live in the area I highly recommend eating at the Terrapin Grille Fallsview Restaurant. The meal portions are generous, the ingredients are fresh and locally grown, the food is prepared to perfection and the wait staff is awesome! I always judge a restaurant not only on food but the wait staff and the Terrapin has some of the most professional, friendly staff I have ever encountered!
